about

The 7-track album features traditional material learned from artists like Geechie Wylie, Booker T. Washington "Bukka" White, and the Mississippi Sheiks, with 2 originals written by Hennessy and Morrison. Also included are Bob Dylan's "Ballad of Hollis Brown", and "Lilac Wine", a tune recorded by Nina Simone on her 1966 "Wild is the Wind" album.

Our music has evolved out of great love and respect for the blues, folk, and jazz idioms. Throughout the process of learning this music, we have tried to see ourselves in it, and to understand where we sit in relationship to tradition.

The record was recorded in two days at the home of Ted Reichman, a mentor, friend, multi-instrumentalist, and gracious host.

Their approach to a repertoire of rural blues and folk music pays homage, while inflecting the sound with elements of free jazz and West African guitar. Hennessy's voice is by turns raw and refined, drawing from her Southern roots. Morrison on guitar & gourd banjo is intertwined as support and lead ... more
